  • Gently pat freshly washed hair with a microfiber towel to absorb moisture and minimise hair breakage.
  • Treat thinning hair with gentle care, and avoid over-brushing, washing, and processing, all of which can further damage already fragile strands.
  • Use a quality wide-tooth comb if you have curly or wavy hair, or a hairbrush with soft, rounded bristle tips for straight hair. Make these your new grooming tools to prevent further disruption of thinning hair.
  • Get rid of any fine-tooth combs and brushes with sharp bristles. These tools can increase breakage of hair.
  • Turn your head upside down to blow-dry your hair when you are in a rush and don’t have time to pat-dry it. This is an easy way to give your thin hair a powerful boost, making it appear more voluminous.

  • Indulge in a nourishing bedtime hair care routine by tenderly combing out breakage-causing tangles and gently gather your hair into a low, loose bun, plait, or ponytail before going to bed, to nudge your hair to new heights.
  • Lather up with a volumising shampoo and conditioner duo. Look for a gentler shampoo that is residue-free, weightless, and sulphate-free (sulphate tends to strip hair of its natural oils, which results in dry hair).
  • Detangle your hair before you shower; dry hair is more durable and less apt to break than wet.

Tips for Cutting Women’s Thinning Hair

DO get regular trims. Keeping split ends at bay will make your locks look their thickest and healthiest.

DO ask for subtle layer. No matter if your hair is thin, wavy, or curly, a layered cut is a fantastic way to create dimension.

DO try a zigzag part to add a little extra volume at the roots.

DON’T have hair that’s all one length. Layers can help your hair look fuller.

DON’T rule out a chic pixie cut.

DON’T get hair extensions. It might be tempting, but the procedure can lead to increased hair thinning due to the pull from the extensions.

Things to avoid with Women’s Thinning Hair

  • Don’t make the turban towel-wrap a part of your post-shower hair routine as this requires twisting, turning, and pulling on your hair, which can lead to nasty hair breakage.
  • Don’t gather your thinning hair into tight hair bands, wrap hair bands around your head, or pull hair firmly into clips. When you have thin hair, “loose” is the key word.
  • Don’t over-condition thinning hair, which can weigh it down and flatten it. Apply conditioner only to the bottom two-thirds of your hair strands, or choose a lightweight leave-in conditioner, such as a mist formulation.
  • Don’t sleep on a pillowcase made of a rough fabric. Replace cotton cases with silky-smooth ones to reduce friction on your hair.
  • Try not to feel dismayed about female pattern hair loss – you did nothing wrong, and there’s not one thing you could have or should have done differently. It’s genetic and was going to start happening no matter what you did to your hair when you were younger.
  • Don’t avoid colouring your hair–just stick to the right shades. This means avoiding extremely light or dark hues, and favouring deep and rich shades that are close to your natural shade.
  • Don’t live in denial about your hair loss, relying on brush-overs and wigs. Female pattern hair loss can be treated with REGAINE®  Solution 2%.3,4
  • Don’t let too much time pass between haircuts. Split ends can inch up your mane, making tresses look even thinner and strands sparser.
  • Don’t sleep on a wet hair. Fine hair just doesn’t bounce back the same way thicker hair does.
  • Don’t pull at your hair roots when brushing a wispy head of hair.
  • Adopt a more casual, wash-and-go hairstyle as your new signature look. This is easier to pull off and maintain with thinner hair, and any trouble spots can easily be handled with a little back brushing to give the appearance of more volume.
  • Wash your hair only when it is dirty. If you can, shampoo every other day to diminish damage from over washing. To stretch the time between washes, try a dry shampoo.
  • Protect your hair from damage by limiting direct sun exposure. Natural sunlight, and artificial ultraviolet light, can break down keratin protein in your hair and hamper its elasticity–definitely undesirable outcomes for already thin hair.
